Challenge
The SI’s client is a leading bank in Central Europe, operating in more than seven countries and eager to increase the usage and market penetration of its investment products. They have a diverse portfolio of 800 custom applications supporting the business comprised of a variety of technologies, including .NET, C#, Java, PHP, Python, JavaScript, PL/SQL, and Transact-SQL.
To achieve their objectives and support ongoing digital transformation efforts, the client decided to rapidly migrate 60 applications from each network bank to the cloud under tight time constraints and quality standards.
They defined three milestones for the SI: build a core cloud factory, industrialize the migration process, and develop talent and skills in cloud practices across all network bank IT teams.
Solution
The SI built a cloud migration factory, leveraging CAST Highlight to efficiently automate application source code analysis and gain deeper insights into the inner workings of the applications. This enabled the SI to swiftly categorize the custom-built application portfolio into three distinct groups based on cloud maturity and migration needs: rehost, re-platform, and refactor.
The SI also created migration playbooks for all network bank IT teams. These playbooks provided the three segmentation scenarios along with execution scripts and rationale based on complexity, effort, duration, and the business case for each application.
The full migration program, following a pilot phase, includes an assessment phase and a gradual execution split into quarterly waves.
Results
Using strategic insights from CAST Highlight’s automated application source code analysis, 60 applications were migrated to the cloud by a 2-pizza team in 6 months.
To enable this, the SI built the migration roadmap and playbooks. They leveraged the Cloud Maturity Index, Open-Source dependencies, Portfolio Advisor for 3R segmentation, and guidance on where each blocker occurred. This framework also raised the cloud maturity of the network bank IT teams and enabled the SI to fine-tune the target architecture for each application.
The migration encompassed not only the applications but also the architecture, provisioning of infrastructure and resources, security aspects, and overall system optimization.
